Steve Baker, the former Brexit minister, called on Boris Johnson to resign.
Speaking in the House of Commons, the Tory MP said: “I am afraid that I am now in a position where I have to admit that if the Prime Minister has held another high position, if he has been Secretary of State, if he he was Minister of State, Deputy Secretary of Parliament, Permanent Secretary, Director General, if he were CEO of a private company or board director, he would have been gone a long time ago.
“The reason he did not leave long ago is that the removal of the current prime minister is an extremely serious issue and God knows that people will understand that I have something to do with it.
“It’s an extremely difficult issue, an extremely big decision, and it tends to unravel history, and we all need to approach such things with reverence and awe and awareness of the difficulty of doing so and the potential consequences.
“That’s why I was tempted to forgive. But now I have to say that the possibility of that has really disappeared for me.
“I must say, I am sorry that because we did not obey the letter and the spirit, but I think we heard that the prime minister knew what the letter was, now the prime minister must leave a long time ago.
“I will certainly vote in favor of this proposal, but really the Prime Minister just needs to know that the concert is over.”
