Toyota Supra six-speed manual transmission, adapted from the Z4 sDrive

Enthusiasts were thrilled when Toyota unveiled the Supra 2023 with manual transmission this week. The press release made a big impact on the DIY show, which is a new development in line with the Japanese sports coupe. The three pedals are available exclusively in the in-line six version, equipped with BMW’s renowned B58 engine. Okay, but how new is this 6MT? As it turned out, he was around the block, at least in some capacity.

Connected to The Drive, a Toyota spokesman revealed some juicy details about the six-speed manual transmission: “The parts used in the gearbox come from a combination of manual transmissions made by ZF, but the combination of parts is exclusive to the GR Supra. To illustrate that the gearbox has undergone some changes, the one in the RWD sports coupe has a new but familiar code name: “GS6L50TZ”.

Why acquaintances? Because the six-speed manual ZF used by the Z4 sDrive with the four-cylinder engine is called the GS6L40LZ. The change from “4” to “5” reflects the modifications made to the “type” and gear. In case you’re wondering, “GS6” refers to a 6-speed manual transmission, while “Z” comes from the gearbox manufacturer, ZF.

For the Supra with three pedals, Toyota engineers have developed a larger diameter clutch that includes a stronger diaphragm spring. The adjustments were needed to enable the 6MT to handle the 368 lb-ft (500 Newton-meters) of torque on the B58. By comparison, the four-seater Z4 with its B48 engine makes 236 lb-ft (320 Nm) on the sDrive20i and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) on the sDrive30i.

I know what some of you are probably thinking so far – Why doesn’t BMW offer the Z4 M40i with a six-speed manual transmission? This is a good question that only a company can answer. Updates to the softtop roadster were usually few. In fact, there are alarming rumors that the Austrian-made convertible will be removed in 2025 without any planned replacement.
