ATLANA – The political action committee of former President Donald Trump has given $ 500,000 to a group that advertises an attack in Georgia on Republican Gov. Brian Kemp.
The spending appears to be aimed at stimulating former US Senator David Purdue, whom Trump backed in the primary election for Republican governor, but the ad never mentions Purdue by name.
GEORGIAN GOVERNOR’S COMPETITION 2022: WHERE TO APPLY CANDIDATES ON KEY ISSUES
This is the first major expense of Trump’s spa to save America, highlighting Trump’s ongoing obsession with defeating Kemp. Trump views Kemp as disloyal because he refused to help undo his defeat in the 2020 state election.
The ad criticized Kemp for not doing enough to combat voter fraud, citing discredited allegations that Georgia’s law enforcement agency has reviewed and rejected.
Save America PAC entered the year with $ 120 million in cash. But so far, the former president has been reluctant to spend that money other than small dues on candidates and money spent on rallies, which he now holds almost every week.
Federal campaign records show the donation went to a group called Get Georgia Right PAC in March, as Politico first reported.
The ad began airing earlier this month, according to Kantar Media. The Associated Press also received a copy of a text message the group sent urging people to watch the ad.
The costs come at a time when Perdue is lagging behind in the polls and is being spent by Kemp. Perdue, which costs $ 50 million, has speculated that it could raise some of its own money.
“We will make sure that this thing is well funded,” Purdue told reporters in March. “We will deliver our message.”
Kemp remains contemptuous of Trump, with spokesman Cody Hall attacking Purdue for remarks he made on Tuesday, criticizing Kemp’s management of the state police.
“David Purdue will need well over $ 500,000 to distract from his reckless joke against the Georgia State Patrol,” Hall said.
The loss of Perdue in Georgia in the May 24 primary may be particularly embarrassing for Trump, who lured Perdue to challenge Kemp and pressured another Republican, Vernon Jones, to leave the race for governor and run for Congress instead. Trump has also backed a number of other Republicans in Georgia who are vying for positions across the state and in Congress.
Trump called Kemp a “coup”, a “coward” and a “complete and complete catastrophe” at a rally in Commerce, Georgia, last month. But the former president was unobtrusive in an April 6 interview with conservative radio host John Fredericks on whether to hold an additional rally for Perdue. He told Fredericks that “it’s not easy to defeat an incumbent governor, just remember that”, adding that “the race is near and we’ll see what happens”.
Purdue repeated Trump’s lies in his own attacks on Kemp, saying at the trade rally that “our 2020 election was absolutely stolen.”
