Twelve wounded, 10 by gunfire, in a shooting at a shopping center in South Carolina

April 16 (Reuters) – Twelve people were injured, 10 of them in a shooting that erupted on Saturday at a shopping center in Columbia, South Carolina, and three people were detained, police said.

Colombian Police Chief William Holbrooke said the shooting at the Columbiana Center was not considered an accidental act of violence, but rather stemmed from “some kind of conflict” between a group of gunmen who know each other.

However, details of the shooting remain scarce, he said. Local media reported an increased presence of police and emergency personnel at the mall about 10 miles north of downtown Colombia, the state capital.

No one was killed in the incident, which took place around 2 pm local time. But 10 people were shot dead and eight were transported to district hospitals. Two of them are listed in critical but stable condition and six in stable condition, Holbrooke said at a briefing hours later.

The victims of the shooting ranged in age from 73 to 15, he said. Two other people were injured while “running” by passers-by fleeing for safety.

At least three people were found carrying firearms in the mall, and at least one of them actually fired, Holbrooke said. Three people have been detained in connection with the shooting, he said.
