Twitter CEO Parag Agraval fires two top executives, freezes hiring before Elon Musk takes over

Twitter also confirmed that it pauses any hiring except business-critical roles.

San Francisco:

Twitter confirmed on Thursday that two top executives are heading to leave and has stopped most of the hiring as Elon Musk is ready to become the new owner of the global messaging platform.

Kayvon Beykpour, general manager who leads research, design and engineering on Twitter, is leaving along with product manager Bruce Falk, a Twitter spokesman told AFP.

However, Bakepur said he was fired by the San Francisco-based technology company.

“The truth is, it’s not like when I imagined leaving Twitter, and it wasn’t my decision,” Beikpur, who is on paternity leave, tweeted.

Twitter boss Parag Agraval “asked me to leave after telling me he wanted to take the team in another direction,” he added.

Twitter also confirmed that in effect this week, it pauses any hiring except business-critical roles.

Musk’s $ 44 billion deal to buy Twitter was announced last month, but still needs the support of shareholders and regulators.

The takeover is expected to be completed later in 2022, with Musk – who is leading the space exploration effort and SpaceX and electric car maker Tesla – to step in as his boss for at least a while.

Musk says he will lift the ban on Twitter against Donald Trump, saying the kicking of the former US president off the platform “alienates much of the country”.

Musk’s approval of Trump’s return has sparked fears among activists that Musk will “open the doors of hatred.”

Trump has said publicly that he will not return to Twitter if he is allowed to, instead sticking to his own social network, Truth Social, which he failed to win.

Trump was pulled from Twitter and other online platforms after supporters of his tweets and a speech suggesting election fraud attacked the US Capitol on January 6, 2021 months earlier.

Musk argues that permanent bans on Twitter should be rare and reserved for accounts that are spam, scams, or managed by software “bots.”

Activist groups have called on Twitter advertisers to boycott the service if it opens the door to offensive and misinformative posts with Musk as the owner.

The fate of Twitter’s chief lawyer, who is considered a moral champion of the platform, is in doubt after Musk tweeted dissatisfaction with the moderation of the content he did.

Lawyer Vijaya Gade is leading efforts to combat harassment and publications that could cause real damage, such as the uprising in the US Capitol.

She was involved in the decision to ban Trump and others, including removing political advertising from the app.
