Police say two people have been charged with first-degree murder in the death of a six-year-old boy in Port Alberni, British Columbia, in 2018.

The RCMP says they arrested 28-year-old Rachel Frank and 29-year-old Mitchell Frank on Friday.

Police said six-year-old Dontey Lucas was found dead on March 13, 2018.

Insp. Eric Rochet said in a press release on Saturday that such investigations were difficult for all involved and he understood that the time needed to reach this point in the case was a challenge for the community.

The Nuu-chah-nulth tribal council thanked the RCMP for their work and said it was a “huge relief” that charges had been filed.

Police did not provide further details, but said the investigation is ongoing and a press conference will be held on Monday.
