The cemetery was cordoned off in Durham County while emergency services dealt with the incident.
Police, paramedics and firefighters are believed to have descended on Ushaw Moor Cemetery around 5 a.m. Thursday.
Officers have plastered the cemetery with a rising tent for forensic scientists while investigations continue.
