One of Vancouver’s most recognizable landmarks was damaged this weekend.

The glass of the Gastown steam watch is broken on one side of its middle part, which protects the pendulum. Many cracks have cobwebs through the glass, although there is no clear point of impact.

Although the glass is obviously broken, none of it seems to have fallen out of place. It is not clear what caused the damage.

The Vancouver Police Department says it is investigating the damage, which was first reported to them on Saturday evening, April 30. Forensic evidence is being collected, as well as recordings from security cameras. Police are also looking for witnesses.

Tourists still gather to take pictures of and with the iconic clock.

Someone put a yellow protective tape around him. In a tweet, the city of Vancouver said it was aware of the damage.

The watch was built and installed in 1977 by Raymond Saunders, a local watchmaker costing about $ 58,000, paid for by the city and donors. It covered a steam grate, which is part of the city’s huge steam heating system.
