The public has been warned about fraudsters who take advantage of the government’s new Council’s tax rebate scheme to target vulnerable people and steal their money. The scheme envisions people across the country receiving £ 150 for their energy bills following a huge increase in the price of gas and electricity in early April.
Now consumer champion Who? warned that the fraudsters were taking advantage of the scheme, while the Local Government Association (LGA) was talking about a recent series of cold calls offering energy discounts that are actually scams, WalesOnline reported.
According to Who ?, the fraudsters claim to be linked to the local council of their victims and say the reimbursement is due, after which they want bank details to pay the £ 150 discount.

The victims of the fraud shared their bank details and saw large sums of money taken from their bank accounts shortly after the phone call. The LGA said the councils did not want bank details over the phone.
All households in England in municipal tax groups A to D will be eligible for a rebate that is not checked for financial status and does not need to be paid. Those who pay municipal tax by direct debit will receive the money directly in their bank account.
If you do not pay your municipal tax by direct debit, then you will be sent a letter with details on how to request. Who? says the variants of the scam are also sent by email and text message.
A spokesman said: “Don’t be tempted to respond to these texts and emails, if you are not currently paying your municipal tax by direct debit, you should wait to receive your letter from the council, which will explain how to request the discount.”
