Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) Said on Sunday that House of Representatives minority leader Kevin McCarthy (California) “is a liar and a traitor” as he has been criticized for audio recordings showing he supports the resignation of the former President Trump after January 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol.
The New York Times reported last week that McCarthy, during a conversation with colleagues from the Republican Party in the House of Representatives on January 10, 2021, said he believed Trump should resign. The minority leader called the report “completely false”.
Shortly afterwards, however, an audio recording of the conversation was released showing McCarthy making remarks he had previously denied.
Asked on Sunday how she reacted to the unfolding situation, Warren criticized the minority leader, calling the circumstances “outrageous.”
“Kevin McCarthy is a liar and a traitor. This is outrageous. And it really is the disease that is gripping the Republican leadership right now, that they are saying one thing to the American public and something else in private, “Warren told co-host Dana Bash on CNN’s The State of the Union.
“They understand that what happened is wrong, an attempt to overthrow our government. And that Republicans instead want to keep trying to figure out how to make the 2020 election different, instead of spending their energy on how we’re moving forward, to build an economy, to make this country work better for the people who sent us to Washington. Shame on Kevin McCarthy, “she added.
Some Republican lawmakers have knocked McCarthy off since the recordings were released, including representatives Adam Kinsinger (Illinois) and Matt Goetz (Florida).
However, McCarthy said on Friday that his relationship with Trump remained intact. The minority leader said he had spoken to the former president twice that day and had a “good talk” about the audio recordings.
He also stressed that “he never asked President Trump to resign” and “he never thought he should resign.”
Trump also told The Wall Street Journal in an interview that he “did not like the call” McCarthy made with his Republican counterparts, but said they were still on good terms.
