Stellantis North America chief operating officer Mark Stewart, who visited the company’s Windsor Automotive Research and Development Center on Monday, confirmed that both plants will operate in three shifts once the refurbishment is complete.

Federal and provincial governments, represented by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Ontario Prime Minister Doug Ford and other key ministers, are also contributing hundreds of millions of dollars as part of plans to green the economy through the next generation of cars.

“The magic number is three today, as in three shifts in Windsor and Brampton,” said Federal Minister for Innovation, Science and Industry Francois-Philippe Champagne.

The Windsor platforms are expected to be in addition to maintaining Pacifica minivan production. Pacifica is expected to undergo an upgrade to become a battery-powered electric vehicle. It is currently available as a hybrid vehicle powered by gas or plug-in.

In addition, Stellantis will spend hundreds of millions of dollars to expand its car research and development center in Windsor. The company will make Windsor’s research center a key center for its research on the electric platform and batteries.

“We have changed the future of the automotive sector in Canada,” Champagne said.

In the latest round of contract negotiations in 2020, the company has pledged to spend up to $ 1.5 billion to prepare Windsor for the production of battery electric and hybrid vehicles.

At the time, it also provided $ 50 million to Brampton for new derivatives on the company’s old LX platform used to make the Dodge Challenger, Charger and Chrysler 300. With no commitments for products after 2023 and rumors that Stellantis will move its electrified versions of the Charger and Challenger to Belleville, Illinois, the message breathes new life into the facility.

Combined with the March announcement of the $ 5 billion Stellantis / LG Energy Solutions battery plant in Windsor, North America’s first automaker, Ontario has shifted from a marginal player in the company’s future plans to a key gear.

“These messages are transformative for our community,” said Irek Kusmierczyk, a Liberal Liberal MP from Windsor-Tecumseh. “These investments have a great multiplier effect.

“Think of the thousands of car workers who have destroyed it over the last 10 years in times of such uncertainty. This is their day. “
