Waterloo Region Airport closed to commercial flights today after a Flair plane overshot the runway

Canada’s Transportation Safety Board (TSB) is investigating after a plane leaving Vancouver with 140 people on board overran the runway at Waterloo Region International Airport on Friday.

The Boeing 737, which is owned and operated by Flair Airlines, was headed to Kitchener-Waterloo when it overran runway 26 on landing at about 6:25 a.m. ET, the TSB said.

Photos and video taken at the scene appear to show the plane coming to rest in a field.

A total of 134 passengers and six crew members were on board. There is visible damage to one wing, but no one was injured, says TSB.

“Passengers got off the plane and were taken to the terminal by bus. The safety and well-being of our passengers and crew is our top priority,” a Flair Airlines spokesperson said in an email to CBC News.

The TSB closed Runway 26 to conduct its investigation, but a spokesperson for the Region of Waterloo told CBC News the airport will be closed to commercial traffic until the end of Friday.
