Following some earlier rumors, Xiaomi today finally confirmed its “long-term strategic partnership” with Leica and that they are jointly developing a flagship smartphone before its launch in July 2022. This will be the latest collaboration of the German mobile imaging company after Sharp, Huawei and Panasonic.
Xiaomi is not the first Chinese phone maker to use know-how in photography from a well-known camera brand. At the end of 2020, Vivo followed in the footsteps of Sony plus Nokia and joined forces with Zeiss, the latest version being the X80 series. Most recently, Oppo and OnePlus began launching phones that were developed in collaboration with Hasselblad, including the Find X5 series and OnePlus 10 Pro.
Xiaomi has not shared much more about this upcoming product, but our money is for the brand new Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor, along with the usual classic aesthetics for images and filters from Leica. By name, this will be either the “Xiaomi 12 Ultra” or the eventual launch of the “Xiaomi 13” series. In a press release, CEO Lei Jun added that “this cooperation will provide a strong impetus to Xiaomi’s imaging strategy.” We will find out more in July.
