“You don’t want to” – Jamie Carragher sends a warning to Liverpool before the Champions League final with Real Madrid

Jamie Carragher believes Liverpool have the ability to beat Real Madrid in the Champions League final, but has expressed concerns about the slow start.

Although the Reds withdrew 3-1 over the Wolves on the last day of the Premier League on Sunday, Pedro Neto stunned Anfield in the early stages when he attacked Ibrahim Konate’s mistake from behind.

And Champions League-winning defender Carragher has outlined the dangers of a slow start against Madrid – but believes his former club is of better quality than the 13-time record holder.

“Liverpool have the power to recover mentally,” the 42-year-old, who helped win the club’s fifth European Cup in 2005, told Blood Red Podcast. “I was never afraid when that early goal came in that they wouldn’t win the game, but you don’t want to do that too often towards the end of the season because you can see signs in the second half where they’re going to get that energy?

“They always seem to find it, they always seem to do something to win the match, but you don’t want to chase a match, against Real Madrid the first goal can be vital and you don’t want to chase a good country on a big field at the end of the season with so much matches at your feet.

“This is something that Liverpool should watch and I keep my fingers crossed that they will not allow the first goal. They (Madrid) just play for moments, I watched them from the first match in the Champions League, when they lost to a team named Sheriff.

“They are not as good as Liverpool, they have lost as many games or more in the Champions League than Liverpool have lost all season, but they just have something for them – which we have as a club. When you fall, you always believe, because we are Liverpool. Real Madrid also has it. They have the faith that they have to win, and that’s what they did.

“They were lucky in every elimination round where they had to go out. Is he lucky? Team spirit? Relationship with players, staff, supporters? And since this is Real Madrid, you have to say the last thing, but if they present themselves as they did what they did in the elimination rounds and we play to the best of our ability, we will win. “
