Two men were killed in separate attacks in Chinatown on Wednesday, police said a day later.
Edmonton police officers responded to a severe attack at a car repair shop in the area of 106 Avenue and 98 Street around 4 p.m.
A 36-year-old man was detained and a 61-year-old man was taken to hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries.
The victim died on Thursday, police said.
Police then responded to a second scene on 105 Avenue and 98th Street and found a wounded man.
The 64-year-old man died there, police said. His autopsy is scheduled for Friday. No further details were known about him or his death.
Homicide detectives believe the suspect they arrested is linked to both the death and the impending charges.
“THERE WAS NO REASON”
According to Tony High, owner of Albert’s Autobody on the corner of 106 Avenue and 98th Street, a surveillance system has caught the unprovoked attack on an employee for more than 30 years.
CTV News Edmonton spoke with High on Thursday morning, hours before police revealed that the man had died.
“We spend literally four hours watching him. There was no reason, “said Hai, standing on the sidewalk in front of his store.
He was called around 4 pm for disruption to his business. He and a security team arrived to find the employee unconscious and a man they did not know in the store.
He wasn’t even breathing, Hai recalled.
The two have been working together since 1989, when High opened the store.
“He was preparing to retire,” Hai said through tears. “He’s actually like a brother to me. Not just an employee.”
Mayor Amarjit Sohi offered his condolences on Thursday afternoon.
“I am saddened to hear about the violent attacks that took place in the Chinatown of Edmonton last night, leaving two valuable members of the community dead. I extend my sincere condolences to the two families concerned and strongly condemn these acts of senseless violence. “
