One person was killed and another was injured in a shooting at a Muni train in San Francisco, officials said.

The shooting took place at 9:56 a.m. right at Forest Hill Muni station as it was heading to Castro station, a San Francisco police spokesman said in a statement to SFGATE. Police arrived at the scene around 10 a.m., according to the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency, which said police stopped the subway between West Portal and Castro stations in both directions.

San Francisco District Supervisor Mirna Melgar wrote on Twitter that the shooting took place on a train. One person was reported killed on the spot. The second man, according to a tweet from a San Francisco police officer, received non-life-threatening injuries. The person is currently at Zuckerberg San Francisco General.

According to a statement from Melgar, a preliminary police report found that “the suspect and the victim were in a heated verbal dispute.” A spokesman for the San Francisco police confirmed to reporters that the shooting did not appear to be a “hate crime” or related to Pride in any way.

Officials are still searching for the suspect who escaped from Castro Mooney station. Video surveillance footage from the station shows the alleged shooter, police said. The suspect was seen wearing “dark clothes and a hooded jacket,” a San Francisco police spokesman said.

“The incident that happened this morning is worrying and is another reason why we need to do more to prevent gun violence,” Melgar said in a statement. “There are too many weapons in our society that escalate the verbal dispute to the meaningless death of a young life.”
