PHOENIX – A 14-year-old girl was killed and eight others were injured early Saturday in a shooting at a crowd at a mall northwest of downtown Phoenix, police said.
Sergeant Andy Williams told reporters that nine people were taken to hospitals after a 1 a.m. shooting sent people running near 10th Avenue and Hatcher Road. The 14-year-old girl died after being taken to hospital, two women are in danger of death and six have non-life-threatening injuries.
In an interview with ABC 15, Williams said no suspects were immediately identified and no arrests were made while authorities collected witness accounts.
Williams said the gun appeared to have been used after an argument broke out between the crowd over what he called a “party.”
“Many bullets were fired at this crowd of people as they all fled the area,” he said.
Williams said the injured were between the ages of 17 and 24.
The shooting came about an hour after police said a teenager had been shot and killed in front of his home about three blocks away. It was unclear whether the two shootings were linked.
Phoenix Mayor Kate Galego responded to the shooting on Twitter, saying: “Looks like we can’t go a day without another mass shooting.”
“Time’s up,” she said. “Change must happen now.”
