An 18-year-old man was rushed to hospital in critical condition after he was stabbed multiple times in a wooded area during a party in Winnipeg’s Charleswood neighborhood.
Police were called to the area of Wilkes Avenue and Community Row around 12:39 a.m. Saturday morning for a report of a stabbing, Const. That’s what Jay Murray said at a press conference on Monday.
Officers drove south on Community Row for about two kilometers until they were spotted by several teenagers who said their friend had been stabbed and that police would have to go into a muddy, wooded area to find him.
Officers grabbed medical equipment, including tourniquets, bandages and a chest seal, and walked a kilometer until they found an 18-year-old man with a number of serious stab wounds.
“I can tell you they were pretty heavy,” Murray said.

Police stabilized the man, who was in critical condition, with the medical equipment they had brought until members of the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service arrived.
Together, police and paramedics took turns carrying the man on a stretcher, Murray said, about a mile back to an ambulance on Community Row.
The man’s condition is stabilized in hospital.
“Our officers were told when they arrived at the hospital that these stabilization efforts … had not occurred, it would have been a homicide,” Murray said.

Police say many people were at the party, but no arrests have been made as of Monday.
“There are many witnesses that we have spoken to so far, many witnesses that we will continue to speak to. We have made significant progress in this investigation,” Murray said.
Members of the Major Crimes Unit are investigating the stabbing and anyone with information is asked to call 204-986-6219 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477).
