Two Metro Vancouver men were arrested in Manitoba after a drug package was dropped by drone on the grounds of Stony Mountain Institution, Manitoba RCMP said.
On Sunday, RCMP in Stonewall, Manchester were told a drone was flying over and into Stony Mountain, just north of Winnipeg. A suspicious vehicle was also reported on a back road near the facility, police said in a news release Friday.
Officers stopped the vehicle on Interstate 7 near Interstate 321, near the federal prison.
They immediately spotted a drone in the back seat and arrested the two men in the vehicle.
After searching the area in Stony Mountain where the drone was seen landing, police also found a package containing methamphetamine and what was believed to be fentanyl.
Prison officials also reported seeing a drone and finding a similar package the day before.
Also on Monday, a person who lives in the area where the traffic stop happened told police they found a suspicious package. RCMP say it’s consistent with other packages found at the jail in the previous two days.
RCMP say methamphetamine and what is believed to be fentanyl were delivered by drone to the jail twice this month. More drugs found at Airbnb rental in Winnipeg. (Submitted by RCMP)
On Wednesday, Winnipeg police were called to an Airbnb on Stradbrook Avenue after the owner found a gun and drugs inside.
Police later determined that the Airbnb was rented by the two men who were arrested Sunday and who did not return to the rental after their arrest, police said.
The two men, in their 20s – one from Vancouver and one from Burnaby, British Columbia – face a number of charges, including two counts of trafficking methamphetamine, possession of drugs for the purpose of trafficking and possession of property obtained by crime.
They also face firearms charges and charges related to possession of cocaine and methamphetamine.
RCMP say more charges are pending. Both remain in custody.
