Two homes were destroyed and a third was severely damaged by lightning on the north coast of Montreal during a severe thunderstorm that swept through southern Quebec on Thursday afternoon.
Police say lightning struck a home around 4:15 p.m. and set fire to a house on Cerisiers Street in the suburb of Saint-Marte-sur-sur-Lac outside the island. The strong wind caused sparks from the fire to spread quickly to two neighboring homes.

“I have never seen a fire caused by lightning to destroy homes in my 22 years as a police officer,” said Insp. Jean-Philippe Labe with Régie de Police du Lac des Deux-Montagnes.

“All are well. “We are very happy about that,” Labe said.
“It was quite difficult, because when [firefighters] I got there, the fire was quite strong. Many hours after they got there, they were still fighting the fire. “
Firefighters from four neighboring municipalities helped put out the blaze and were still on the scene at 9 p.m.
