Two people died after a boat hit a breakwater made of rocks near Tommy Thompson Park late Tuesday, Toronto police said.
A 34-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman were found dead in the boat after it was pulled from the port of Toronto, police said in a press release on Wednesday.
Another eight people were rescued by the vessel while it was still in the water, police said.
Police received a call about a collision between a seagoing ship in the Port of Toronto and Tommy Thompson Park at 11:54 p.m.
The boat was traveling northeast to the port area when it hit a breakwater and capsized. Toronto Marine Police and Toronto Fire Department responded
“A search was conducted to find two others who were reported to have been on the boat at the time of the collision, but were not initially located,” the police said in a statement.
After the others were rescued, the crews used special equipment to pull the boat out of the water. The bodies were then found, police said.
Toronto police traffic police officers, with the help of the Marine Corps, continue to investigate.
