It all comes down to the final round as a possible match situation has developed at the 150th Open Championship. Rory McIlroy and Victor Hovland share the lead at 16 under and the duo are four shots clear of their nearest pursuers heading into the final 18 holes at the Old Course at St Andrews. The two traded shots on Saturday and ended up carding a 6-under 66 to put their names at the top of the leaderboard.
In case McIlroy and/or Hovland falter, Cameron Smith and Cameron Young will be right there waiting to take advantage, as the two who came from behind in the third round sit at 12 under, an arm’s length away from the leader . World No. 1 Scotty Scheffler will need a lifetime if he wants to end 2022 with major triumphs. Five shots off the pace at 11 under, the Masters champion has an outside chance to make a memorable year even more so.
This year’s collection of major championships has been some of the best in recent memory, and the 150th Open should continue that streak and crown another deserving champion.
