21-year-old accused of murder after a woman was found dead in Nanaimo

A 21-year-old man has been charged with murder after a 40-year-old Victoria woman was found dead at a home in southern Nanaimo earlier this week.

The Nanaimo RCMP announced on Wednesday that 21-year-old Simon Baker has been formally charged with second-degree murder in the death of 40-year-old Denise Alik of Victoria.

Alik was found dead in a home on Eighth Street, behind Park Elementary School, by the RCMP around 10pm on June 20th. Mountis was called home after receiving a disturbance signal.

Baker, a resident of Nanaimo, was arrested shortly after the incident and remains in police custody. He is due to appear in court at 2pm on Wednesday (June 22nd).

British Columbia law enforcement officials rarely name identified victims, but in a press release released Wednesday, Nanaimo told the RCMP that they were unsure why Alik, 40, was even at home or even knew Baker.

The RCMP asked anyone who might have information as to why Alik was in Nanaimo to contact them immediately at 250-754-3245 and cited file 2022-21048.
