LOS ANGELES CENTER (KABC) – Three men were found dead from a possible fentanyl overdose at an apartment complex in downtown Los Angeles on Thursday morning.
Police conducted a welfare inspection of the Spring Street complex shortly after 1 a.m., according to the Los Angeles Police Department. When they entered, they found three unresponsive men, described only as in their 40s.
Authorities say a police officer began to feel nauseous and dizzy and was taken to hospital in stable condition. It is not clear what caused these symptoms.
Fentanyl, the cheap but powerful drug, is 80-100 times stronger than morphine and is often added to heroin to make it more powerful. This led to a wave of deaths from coast to coast.
“Across the country, and especially in LA County, there have been many cases of people overdosing on fentanyl because of the amount of the drug in it,” said Captain Stephen Ruiz.
Hazmat teams had to decontaminate the area before police could continue their investigation.
