4 dead, 2 injured in Indiana mall shooting – National

Four people were killed in a shooting Sunday night at a mall in Greenwood, Indiana, and two others were taken to a hospital with injuries, local police said.

The shooter is among the four dead.

“It appears that a good Samaritan who was armed observed the shooting and shot the shooter,” said Jim Ison, police chief of the Greenwood Police Department, during a press briefing. He noted that that person, who has been identified as a 22-year-old Bartholomew County man, is believed to have used a handgun.

The shooter had a rifle with “several” rounds of ammunition when he entered the diner and began shooting.

Multiple agencies, including the FBI and Department of Homeland Security, responded and remained on scene to investigate.

A backpack found near the eatery’s bathroom was cleared by police, as were all stores in the mall.

“We are confident that there are no additional threats at this time,” Ison said. “We are doing the best we can at the moment. I want people to feel safe in Greenwood.

As police begin processing the crime scene, they are expected to remain at the mall until the “early (morning) hours,” Eason added.

He did not receive a response on whether the mall would reopen Monday.

The motive for the shooting has not been established.

Greenwood is a southern suburb of Indianapolis with a population of about 60,000. Mayor Mark Myers asked for “prayers for the victims and our first responders.”

“This tragedy cuts to the core of our community,” Myers said in a statement.
