400,000 patio umbrellas sold at Costco withdrawn due to fire risk

More than 400,000 patio umbrellas sold at major Costco retailers have been withdrawn due to a malfunction that could cause them to explode.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission issued a withdrawal notice this week after six reported product malfunctions.

One incident sent a man to hospital with a smoke problem.

“The company has received six reports of overheating of lithium-ion batteries,” the commission wrote. “This includes three reports of ignition of solar panels during charging via the indoor AC adapter and two reports of ignition of umbrellas when the solar panel washer overheated and ignited while attached to the umbrella, and one injury to inhalation of smoke.

The CSO called on umbrella owners to stop using them immediately.

“Consumers should immediately stop using the umbrellas, remove the lithium-ion battery washer from the top of the umbrella, store the washer away from the sun and away from flammable materials, and do not charge the washer with the AC adapter. “

Users can return umbrellas to any location at Costco Warehouse for a full refund. Those who are unable to return the product can contact Costco for guidance on obtaining a refund.

Separately, Costco is giving up an advantage that New Jersey residents have been enjoying for years.

From July, Costco will require membership cards from customers who want to fill their gas tanks.

“Effective July 5, 2022, your active Costco membership card will be required for gasoline purchases,” the store announced this week.

So far, Costco’s locations in New Jersey have been unique with their open lines and lack of membership requirements to charge a vehicle.
