Authorities said on Sunday they had found the bodies of three people who went missing after a collision between two boats in Georgia resulted in five deaths. Four others have been rescued, according to the US Coast Guard.
Two people have been confirmed dead, while three others are unaccounted for, according to a statement from Georgia’s Ministry of Natural Resources.
Several agencies have searched for the three missing victims using “sector scan sonar and divers,” the Georgia DNR reported. The three missing victims were found Sunday morning at about 9 a.m. in 14-foot deep water and “in close proximity to each other,” the Georgian DNR reported.
The identities of the five victims have not been released pending notification to their families.
Georgia’s DNR said in a statement that witnesses said the collision occurred when “two center-console boats carrying a total of nine passengers, six on one ship and three on the other, were traveling in opposite directions when they collided.”
The other four people were rescued and taken to a local hospital with minor injuries, the DNR in Georgia reported. The Coast Guard said one man was in “good condition”. There is no other information about their injuries. A man with a visible leg injury had to be pulled out of the water by helicopter, according to a video posted by the Coast Guard.
The collision occurred around 10:30 a.m. “on the Wilmington River near the docks of the Outland Wildlife Center, where Richardson Creek and the Wilmington River meet in Chatham County,” the DNR in Georgia said. The Coast Guard said it was notified of the crash by a good Samaritan at 10:42 p.m.
The Coast Guard, the DNR, the Chatham County Marine Patrol, the Savannah Fire Department and the Chatham Emergency Services continue to search for the three missing boats.
Georgia DNR is investigating the crash.
