5, shot during a funeral at Graceland Cemetery in Racine

RACIN, Wisconsin – A suspect shot and wounded five people during a funeral at Graceland Cemetery in Racine on Thursday afternoon, the family told TMJ4 News.

Racine police described the shooting as a “critical” incident and urged people to stay away. Police said many shots were fired, that there were victims, but their condition is unknown. The area is still active and is being clarified, police said.

Dreger-Langendorf’s funeral home and crematorium confirmed to TMJ4 News that the funeral at the time was that of Da’Shontai L. King Sr. The funeral home worker said members of King’s family had been beaten. All funeral home staff are fine, they said.

Earlier, the family identified Da’Shontai King Sr. as the man who was shot and killed by a Racine police officer near the 12th and Schiller on March 20. Police said then that a police officer tried to stop the trafficking of firearms. Police said King got out of the vehicle armed with a firearm. The officer ordered the suspect to stop and follow orders, but he refused, police said. The policeman opened fire. King was pronounced dead at the scene.

The man shot and killed by Racine police on Friday afternoon is Da’Shontai King Sr., according to the family. He was 37 years old.

The incident happened around 2:30 p.m.

A spokesman for the nearby All Saints Ascension Hospital said the hospital was closed.

“The safety of our associates, patients, visitors and suppliers is our top priority. Due to the off-site situation, enhanced security measures have been introduced at All Saints Ascension Hospital. Patients can still schedule appointments and the emergency department is currently admitting patients. However, due to great care, the number of open entrances to the hospital has been reduced and additional security checks have been introduced, “Ascension reported.

The Racine United School District tells us that Park High School was fired about 10 minutes later than normal after law enforcement assured them it was safe to do so.
