Joel Embiid is experiencing pain and discomfort in his right thumb, according to Ramona Shelburn and Adrian Wojnarowski. Embiid trains on Friday and is expected to play in Game 4 of the Philadelphia 76ers’ first round against the Toronto Raptors. He may receive an MRI in the near future to find out what the severe injury is, but this has not yet been determined. According to Shams Charania, there are fears that Embid is dealing with a torn ligament in his thumb, but Embid promised to continue playing after the injury.

Embiid was stellar throughout the first round. His 76ers are one win away from knocking the Raptors out of the playoffs. Embiid has averaged just under 28 points and 13 rebounds in the series, and in Game 3 he made 3 points with 0.9 seconds until the end of overtime to give the 76ers the victory over the Raptors.

Embid has a long history of post-season injuries. Although he missed just one game last year, a knee injury limited him to the playoffs in 2021. Similarly, he struggled to stay on the floor in the 2019 postseason and apparently missed the first two seasons of his career due to injury. While Embid is arguably the best player in the NBA when he’s healthy, endurance has always been a major concern.

If the Sixers take care of business in Game 4 on Saturday, Embiid will probably have time to rest before the second round, which is likely to come against the Miami Heat. The 76ers need Embiid to be 100 percent if they plan to seriously compete for the championship this season. James Harden and Tyrese Maxi helped him score, but in the end their hopes rested on his broad shoulders.
