James Heapy, the Armed Forces Secretary who is understood to be running Mr Wallace’s campaign, said: “One of the things I like most about Ben is that he has spent the last 48 hours thinking very hard whether wants to do it.
“It’s so typical of Ben that he understands it’s a huge responsibility and he wants to make sure he’s ready for it, and if he is, he’ll be a great prime minister.”
Mr Heappey said he had worked in Mr Wallace’s team for two-and-a-half years and that it was “no coincidence that his team has remained the way it is”.
“He says it straight,” he said. “There is a dimension that Ben is now known on the world stage as a pair of safe hands. His biggest selling point is that he is good, honest, decent, hardworking, communicates in a way that the public understands and likes, and that he is honest about what he does and what he doesn’t know.”
Jeremy Quinn, the Defense Procurement Secretary, Leo Doherty, Veterans Affairs Secretary Alex Stafford and Suzanne Webb are also known to be working on Mr Wallace’s campaign.
Those described as Mr Wallace’s “ride or die”, including Mark Lancaster, a former armed forces secretary, Graham Stewart, a Tory MP, and David Mundell, a former Scottish minister, are said to be working on his campaign .
