BC Fisheries: Halibut, crab seized after violations

Four Alberta men were collectively fined thousands of dollars and lost a significant halibut catch after they were caught breaking several regulations in British Columbia this week.

The British Columbia Conservation Service said it was conducting routine inspections in Terrace when the catch was discovered. Officers determined the catch was “illegal”, suggesting the group failed to comply with regulations on possession restrictions and “transporting fish to ensure they are identifiable and measurable”.

As a result, officers confiscated nine halibut and four bags of processed crab. The entire seizure weighed more than 80 pounds.

In addition, “numerous” violation tickets totaling $4,500 were issued.

“The seafood will be distributed to needy residents of the area,” BCCOS said in a social media post.

“COS regularly conducts summer fisheries compliance checks on land and water.”
