AFTERNOON UPDATE: The storms have now begun to develop, with a mostly easterly moving storm pattern that has a slight dip to the south.
Calgary is in a tough spot amid the line of storms; right now the projection is pretty much 50:50 as to whether these storms cross the outer limits of our city (both south and north sides). The most likely storm period in Calgary is from 4:30 to 6:00 tonight as energy builds up.
In terms of the forecast, we’re still looking at the potential for a storm tomorrow. In fact, more than one forecast model is painting a similar picture of what we’re likely to experience today, making for another severe weather warning day.
Other than that, there really aren’t any changes. Monday offers a slight chance of precipitation, but the bulk of our next rain wave is still slated for Tuesday, and then we enter something of a heat dome.
MORNING EDITION: Widespread thunderstorms are possible across southern Alberta today. These are the type of storms that will strengthen as they continue across the prairies, providing only moderately unstable conditions over Calgary. That doesn’t mean Calgarians won’t have to adjust their plans.
Wind and hail remain the benchmarks to reckon with.
A westerly wind passage across the Rockies reopens Saturday for storm potential, but is also remote at this stage. With the firm upper bound in place, expect another day of “maybe weather” similar to Wednesday and Thursday.
Sunday remains warm, but it’s an in-between before we see that incoming ridge of high pressure come down our way, opening us up to northwesterly winds and cooler conditions. Most of the precipitation has been pushed back to Tuesday.
