Biden News Today: President jokes about “good old days” with Obama as he stops student loan debt for sixth time

Obama jokingly called Biden “vice president” on his return to the White House

Barack Obama visited the White House on Tuesday for his first public event at the executive mansion since leaving office. He was involved in the celebration of the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, while Joe Biden announced changes to the health program that could get up to 200,000 uninsured Americans eligible for new coverage.

The visit led many Democrats to hope that Mr Biden could benefit from his former boss’s still high approval rating. Mr Biden has recently struggled to raise his profile in opinion polls, and there are serious fears that apathy and frustration among Democrat voters could allow Republicans to run in this year’s by-elections. Mr Obama says Democrats have to tell a story to win in the interim, they “just have to tell it”.

Meanwhile, on Capitol Hill yesterday, the Senate Judiciary Committee voted 11-11 for the nomination of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson for the Supreme Court. The result will not prevent Ms. Jackson’s nomination from continuing in the Senate; she seems to already have the support of 53 senators, with Republicans Susan Collins, Lisa Markowski and Mitt Romney breaking the ranks to support her.

The Minister of Internal Security is meeting with the Republican Assembly on border restrictions

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas met with Republican members on Tuesday in the House of Representatives of the Border Security Group, but Republicans were “not happy with the answers.”

The Border Security Group – following last week’s announcement that the White House would remove all restrictions on Covid from the Trump era at the border – was fully charged during the meeting.

“It was a rough crowd, and you have to give it a lot of credit for choosing the toughest crowd, coming in and listening to them,” said Darrell Isa, a California Republican who attended the meeting.

“Nothing was really decided, except that he promised to provide a number of subsequent pieces of information,” he said.

Representative Brian Babin of Texas, co-chair of the group, told the meeting: “We appreciate his courage to come in, knowing that we are 100 percent against him. But we were not happy with the answers he gave us. “

Biden extends the freeze on the Covid student loan until August 31

The United States is once again extending its pandemic-era break on federal student loans by postponing the restart date until at least August 31, the Associated Press reported.

This is the sixth time that the deadline for resuming payments has been extended as Joe Biden faces pressure from Congress and concerns about inflation.

Prior to the extension, the moratorium was due to expire on May 1, and more than 43 million Americans with $ 1.6 trillion in collective government loans would be back on track for their debt.

US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin responds to Matt Goetz

U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin looked so enraged by the bizarre series of interrogations by Republican Congressman Matt Goetz that he found himself in a game with screaming Florida officials at the end of Mr. Gaetz’s five-minute round.

Mr Austin was on Capitol Hill on Tuesday to testify at a hearing by the House Armed Services Committee on the 2023 budget request for the fiscal year, but Mr Gaetz apparently decided to used his time to scold the former US Central Command chief for what he described as US defense failures caused by the Pentagon’s embrace of “vigilance.”

In particular, Mr Gaetz asked for a lecture given at the US National Defense University by the French economist and author Thomas Pickett, entitled “China’s Response: The Case for Global Justice and Democratic Socialism”.

Mr Kinzinger said the “world order” was challenged for the first time since World War II, but his fellow Republicans were behaving like “a bunch of kids”.

The mood on Capitol Hill

Representative Dan Kildi summed up the mood on Capitol Hill in front of Politico’s Sarah Ferris:

There are three types of days here. There are days at West Wing when we do some really great things. There are days at the House of Cards where the place just seems to fall apart. Then there are the days of Veep. Today is something like Veep Day. The fox bites Amy, Fred[Upston}leavesSleavingItjustsucks[Ъпстън}ситръгваПростоегадно[Upston}’sleavingItjustsucks

Obama tells Democrats how to win the by-elections

Former President Barack Obama had a simple message for Democrats who are worried about losing their majority in the 2022 by-elections:

“We have a story to tell, we just have to tell it,” he told NBC News’s Peter Alexander.

The former president received a standing ovation when he returned to the White House for the first time since leaving the Oval Office in 2017 to mark the 12th anniversary of the passage of his signed health care law, the Affordable Care Act, nicknamed Obamacare in the press.
