The author of “How to Kill Your Husband” is now on trial for the murder of her husband – National

A self-published writer who once wrote an essay entitled “How to Kill Your Husband” is now on trial for the alleged murder of her husband.

Nancy Crampton-Brophy, 71, is accused of fatally shooting her husband, Daniel Brophy, 63, in June 2018. She was arrested and charged with murder three months after his death, the Associated Press reported.

However, despite the title of her essay, a judge ruled that the online publication could not be presented as evidence against her, NBC News reported.

In her trial, which began Monday, Oregon County Attorney Sean Overstreet told jurors that Crampton-Brophy was motivated by greed and a $ 1.4 million insurance policy.

According to The Oregonian, Crampton’s husband Brophy was killed while preparing for work early in the morning of June 2, 2018. He was a teacher at the Oregon Culinary Institute and worked alone in a classroom in the kitchen.

Brophy’s death was a mystery until his wife was arrested. Authorities never named another suspect.

The AP reported that investigators found no signs of force, fighting or robbery. Brophy had his cell phone, wallet, and car keys with him.

Lead counsel Lisa Maxfield said Crampton-Brophy and her finances had deteriorated since Brophy’s death, far from the prosecution’s claim that she profited from ill-gotten gains.

Portland television KGW reported that before the trial began on Monday, a judge ruled in favor of the defense, guaranteeing that jurors would not hear about the essay “How to Kill Your Husband”, which was written 11 years ago.

The judge said the publication was old and was written for a writing seminar. Any value he might have is outweighed by the prejudices he may cause in the jury.

Crampton-Brophy posted on Facebook shortly after her husband’s death. She said she was “struggling to make sense of everything right now.”

Her autobiography states that Crampton-Brophy is “married to a chef whose mantra is: life is a science project.”

“As a result, there are chickens and turkeys in my backyard, a great vegetable garden that also grows insecticide tobacco and hot food on the table every night,” she wrote.
