Backlog Club: Week Zero, May – it’s time to play Earthbound

Backlog Club’s number one rule: Work through your pile of unplayed video games one by one and discuss them with other people. Rule number two of Backlog Club: Don’t talk about Backlog Club.

Just kidding! Tell everyone. Please.

Hello again and welcome back to the Backlog Club, our new and experimental feature that forces us to start digging into our Shame Cup – games we haven’t been able to play or finish yet. It works a bit like Book Club, because we’ll all be playing the same game every month (as you voted for!) And then we’ll get back together to talk about it – once every two weeks and again at the end of the month. Fun!

Last month’s game was Slay The Spire, which you can read about if you want to catch up:

But this month’s game, thanks to last month’s vote, is Earthbound, defeating Undertale and Moon, with 50% of you voting for it.

Admittedly, I played a bit on Earthbound. But that should give me the boost of ass I need to finish it (Image: Kate Gray)

Earthbound is a strange, unique and incomparable game that was originally released on SNES in 1994 (Japan) and 1995 (North America). He has a dedicated fan base, but remains a cult favorite, with the well-known Japanese sequel Mother 3 being perhaps one of the most coveted Western releases in Nintendo’s gaming history.

However, Earthbound itself is quite widely available and describes in detail the adventures of Ness (a young boy you can name yourself) and his collection of friends as they try to defeat Gigas, going through a strange and wonderful world full of strangeness, monsters and problems. to solve.

Your best bet to play Earthbound (if you don’t already have one) is the Nintendo Switch Online service, which you can simply get for this month if you want. It only costs $ 3.99 a month and you can play Earthbound as much as you want.

Absolute chaos. (Image: Kate Gray)

The good news: You can choose the game we will play in June – from a list set by me, or we will never agree on something. Overall, I like to choose a game that is easily accessible and, if possible, free, including those on the Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Plus, as well as the Nintendo Switch Online service, so anyone can join without spending a lot of money. It’s also a good idea to take advantage of your subscriptions!

Last month, the games I chose (Undertale, Moon and Earthbound) had a lot in common – they’re all RPGs with weird twists, and they’re all about Toby Fox, the creator of Undertale, who was heavily influenced by the Moon and Earth.

This month’s theme is “Stylish Adventure Stories with Murder Mysteries at Heart” because I’m a fan of a good detective. But which one will it be?

Tell us your thoughts on the games above and the Earthbound game – is it your first time, or will you be playing it again so you can join in the fun? Backlog Club welcomes you all!
