Prime Minister Andrew Fury says the advice of an expert group on the future of Churchill Falls will be an education for both the public and the government.
The panel was unveiled on Wednesday to ensure that Newfoundland and Labrador get the most out of Labrador’s sprawling development when the treaty with Quebec expires in 2041.
And with 19 years to go, Fury says planning time is now in the world for 80 to 100 years of hydropower.
He says the panel members are a solid cross-section of expertise that will inform the public more.
Fury says he expects the cabinet and government to receive education through the panel process, noting that although they are expected to report in the fall, this is not a difficult time.
The establishment of such an expert group for planning for 2041 was key according to the recommendations of the study of Muscat Falls.
Panel members include President Carl Smith, former Fortis CEO and Newfoundland Power chief, Hydro President Jennifer Williams, and David Vardy, a longtime outspoken critic of the Muskrat Falls project.
