Google AR translation glasses are like subtitles for the real w

(Pocket-lint) – The introductory note of Google I / O 2022 gave us a number of great statements, but it was the final joke that excited many people – a prototype of glasses for AR live translation.

The idea behind the glasses is that you can wear them and take advantage of Google’s translation. We’ve all tried Google Translate, but Google has a mission to do it live, instantly – and be able to have conversations between people.

The demo demonstrates a prototype of glasses that can use AR to add subtitles to your field of vision so you can read while someone speaks to you – so you know immediately what they say, regardless of the language they speak.

“It’s like subtitles for the world,” said Max Spear, product manager, speaking in the opening video.

The example was mother and child, mother speaks Mandarin, child English – and immediately, the language barrier is gone, they can communicate without problems.

This is based on the work that Google puts into live translation and transcription, allowing written text to come from the spoken language, not just translate the written language.

The possibilities offered by such a product are not only useful for those who speak different languages, but can also be useful for those who are deaf or hard of hearing, again, using the technology to remove a huge barrier.

In the past, people have laughed at AR glasses. The reception was quite poor, with privacy concerns, questions about the need for a constant flow of information – but in the case of use as a live translation, we can all see the immediate benefits that such a device would bring.

As Google says, this is just a prototype, but hopefully this is a set of AR glasses that will enter the real world.
