Now that the Sofia police have completed their investigation and issued the latest batch of fines, the long wait for Sue Gray’s findings is almost over.
Critics of Boris Johnson hope that Gray’s report in Partygate will expose the scale of the violation of the law on his watch in basic colors. But will it be as devastating as they want?
Insiders believe that while she will be “cursed for public service”, Gray will not deal a deadly blow to the prime minister.
A source familiar with the report believes that Gray’s assessment will be that there is evidence of evidence that he was ill-advised and is not necessarily aware of the events he encountered.
But if the report reveals what a senior conservative describes as an “industrial” breach of the rules at the heart of the government, it will be difficult for Mr Johnson to accuse himself of ignorance.
People close to Sue Gray’s investigation team believe that most of her anger will be directed at the civil service or part of it.
She will not think highly of those who may not meet the professional standards she expects.
