Russia’s offensive in Donbass has been a significant success, with Ukrainian authorities saying the “fate of the country” could be decided in ongoing battles.
Moscow’s troops were close to encircling the neighboring cities of Severodonetsk and Lishchansk, whose capture would give them control of half the eastern region.
The cities are located on the Seversky Donets River, and Ukrainian forces have been heavily dug in after resistance from Moscow-backed separatists in the 2014 war.
There were unconfirmed reports that Russian forces had cut off the road Kyiv supplied to its fighters in Severodonetsk.
“We are now witnessing the most active phase of the full-scale aggression that Russia has launched against our country,” said Alexander Motuzyanik, a spokesman for Ukraine’s defense ministry.
“The situation of [eastern] the front is extremely difficult because the fate of this country may be being decided [there] right now.”
