A Coventry man killed his wife with a machete before setting himself on fire in a homicide, an investigation has revealed. Seva Singh Badial, 87, repeatedly hit his wife, Sukjit, with a machete in the living room of their home on Kenilworth Road, Coventry.
He then went to the garden and sat in an outdoor fireplace, and while he was still wearing his blood-stained clothes, he poured liquid on himself before lighting it. What happened in the garden was filmed by video surveillance.
Their bodies were found on June 29, 2021.

An investigation into their deaths in the Coventry Coroner’s Court found that “there is a farewell note on a chair in the living room, written by the deceased, describing a dispute with his wife.” Delroy Henry, a district investigator for Coventry and Warwickshire, concluded that Mr Badial had committed suicide while his 73-year-old wife had been killed illegally, BirminghamLive reported.
In a recording of the hearing, Mr Henry said Ms Badial had “suffered a number of injuries to her upper body and limbs, which have been described as protective actions to repel a blade tool”. The forensic court heard that a garden machete hook had been found next to her body, along with a wrench that also hit her in the face.
The medical examiner said Ms. Badial had died from head and face injuries, while the cause of her husband’s death was a fire.

Hundreds of people went out on social media to express their sadness when the news of their death came and to offer their condolences and prayers for the couple. The couple had four children and seven grandchildren, and Mr. Badial ran the famous Badial department store on Soho Road in Birmingham.
A statement from their family said they were “ardent supporters of good causes and committed members of the Midlands local community”.
