Easyjet cancels flights due to “system failure” – latest news

The flights of thousands of easyJet passengers were canceled today due to what is considered a breakdown in the entire airline’s system.

The Independent estimates that at least 200 flights were caused in the chaos that easyJet blames for “IT problems”.

EasyJet said late this afternoon that the problem had already been resolved, but “there may still be some disruption in the coming hours”.

An airline spokeswoman said: “We advise customers who need to travel with us to continue checking Flight Tracker for the status of their flight before going to the airport.

“We apologize for the inconvenience and customers may apply for compensation in accordance with the regulations.”

“IT system issues fixed”: easyJet issues statement of cancellation

easyJet issued a cancellation statement this afternoon stating that flights “may still be subject to some interruptions in the coming hours” and confirming that customers can claim appropriate compensation.

An easyJet spokesman said: “easyJet can confirm that previous problems with IT systems have already been fixed.

“Unfortunately, they led to some cancellations earlier today, and while we expect to run most of our remaining flight program, some may still be subject to some interruptions in the coming hours.

“We advise customers who need to travel with us to continue checking Flight Tracker for the status of their flight before going to the airport.

“We apologize for the inconvenience and customers may apply for compensation in accordance with the regulations.”

“We arrived from Inverness to Gatwick this afternoon”

Against the backdrop of today’s cancellations and delays, an easyJet passenger is celebrating his arrival at the airline’s largest base, London Gatwick, early – 15 minutes ahead of schedule to be precise.

The passenger was on a flight from Inverness. Their plane took off from Gatwick minutes before the damage to IT systems grounded the operation.

The plane turned to Inverness as usual. It came out a few minutes late, but it caught up – and with much fewer easyJet flights around the normally congested Gatwick, it arrived early.

The publication leads to the flight tracking page, where you can search by flight number or point of departure and arrival.

More flights were canceled on Thursday night

Another tranche of easyJet flights was canceled on Thursday night.

From Gatwick Airport, easyJet’s largest base, departures for Hurghada to Egypt, Copenhagen, Paris CDG, Geneva, Munich and Malaga have already been canceled.

In Manchester, key holiday flights to Faro in Portugal and Milan Malpensa in Italy have been added to the original dozen cancellations.

For each outbound flight that is canceled, more than 150 passengers are likely to wait at the other end of the route to fly home.

“No explanation and zero assistance from the ground crew”: Fury of passengers while holidaymakers are blocked abroad

EasyJet customers turned to social media to complain that they were blocked abroad due to the airline’s IT complications this afternoon.

“Thanks to @easyJet for canceling our flight from Prague to Manchester 2 hours before! We had to pay for a hotel tonight, another flight tomorrow and all our expenses. Without explanation and zero help from the ground crew, “wrote David Kio.

“Best job @easyJet leaves 200+ people blocked until Monday in Pisa due to canceled flight,” wrote Twitter user Phil.

Ceitidh wrote: “Hello, my sister is currently stranded at Palma Airport with two four-year-old children and is unable to return to Glasgow after her flight was canceled. Could you advise me what he needs to do to get home?

Many reports concerned the lack of communication from the airline.

Suzanne Seyghal wrote: “Dear @easyJet, have you tried to turn it off again? Please. Yours, one of the thousands of dissatisfied travelers with ruined vacation plans … (PS: if you ever need advice on communication, let me know – the information was definitely missing today …) ”

Can my easyJet seat be given to someone whose flight was canceled today?

In today’s Ask Me Anything event, Simon Calder of The Independent was asked how today’s cancellation of easyJet could affect flights with the airline later this week.

One reader asks: “We have to fly with easyJet on Sunday. Is it possible for those whose flights have been canceled today to get our seats? Our flight is fully booked. ”

Simon replies, “Really good question. The answer is no. Once someone’s flight is canceled, he goes right to the back of the queue for further departures.

“However, as explained in the article here, easyJet must do everything possible to get them to their destination on the first day of the trip or as soon as possible thereafter, including buying tickets from competing airlines.

The “Emergency” message was “sent by mistake”, says easyJet

An easyJet spokesman said a statement alleging that Thursday afternoon’s cancellations were caused by “extraordinary circumstances” – thus nullifying all claims for compensation from affected passengers – had been “sent by mistake”.

The spokesman said: “The problem with IT systems has already been fixed. Unfortunately, the “emergency” was sent by mistake.

“We believe that the cancellations related to problems with IT systems are not extraordinary. We will republish customer communications to those who have received incorrect information. “

Are airlines allowed to offer me a replacement flight days later?

This week, several readers reported that easyJet offered them a replacement flight a few days after the day their flight was canceled by the airline.

Independent travel correspondent Simon Calder said: “You have the right to travel on the first day of departure if there is any commercial way to get you to your destination. You must give the canceling airline the opportunity to arrange a new flight (or, for destinations such as Paris, Brussels or Amsterdam, the Eurostar train).

“Airlines understandably want to keep passengers in their own services, but there are clear limitations. The Civil Aviation Authority says that if the canceling airline has another flight on the same day, it can book you again (and provide food while you wait).

“If the canceling airline cannot or will not fulfill its obligation, you must purchase a ticket and then request it back.”
