A Florida man posted his photos, suggesting he was heavily armed and headed to the “nearest school”, according to authorities over the weekend.
Corey Anderson, 18, was arrested at a home in Lutz on Sunday after authorities received a signal earlier in the day that he had made the threat online while posting pictures of himself with what looked like a rifle, pistol and tactical vest. , according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.
The photo was accompanied by a caption that read, “Hey, Siri, directions to the nearest school,” authorities said.
Subsequent investigation found that the pistol and rifle were airsoft pistols that fired, not bullets.
“This type of threat is unacceptable,” Sheriff Chad Cronister said in a statement Sunday. “This man is deliberately instilling fear in our community as a nasty joke, but be warned, it’s not funny.”
Deputies will prosecute anyone who threatens a school, Hronister said.
“Protecting students is our top priority,” the sheriff said. “We take school threats very seriously. If you see anything suspicious, please contact us immediately. “
Anderson of Lutz was charged with threatening a mass shooting or terrorism. His bond was set at $ 7,500. Anderson is no longer on the list as being detained early Monday, prison records show. It is unclear whether he hired a lawyer.
Anderson was detained one day after a 10-year-old boy from Florida threatened in text messages that he would carry out a mass shooting at his school. The Post kept the name of the fifth-grader at Patriot Elementary School in Cape Coral because he is a minor.
“This student’s behavior is disgusting, especially after the recent tragedy in Uwalde, Texas,” Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno said in a statement about the young boy. “Making sure our children are safe is paramount.
The threats came just days after a gunman stormed Rob Elementary School in Uwalde, Texas, with a pair of AR-15 rifles and killed 19 fourth-graders and two teachers on Tuesday. The massacre was the deadliest school shooting since 26 people – including 20 students – were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut in December 2012.
President Biden mourned in private with the families of Uwalde’s victims on Sunday as he vowed to take action amid a chanting of “do something” by a crowd of about 100 as he left the church.
“To all affected by the horrific shooting at Uwalde Elementary School, Texas: We grieve with you,” Biden tweeted Sunday. “We pray with you. We are with you. And we are committed to turning that pain into action. “
