Now, as he prepares to see his bubble of income with a new role in Channel 5, Dan Walker says he is “embarrassed” by the amount of money he earns.

He added that he was also aware that in the current climate, many people, including some of his family members, are struggling to put three meals a day on the table.
Now, as he prepares to see his income bubble with a new role on Channel 5, Dan Walker says he is “embarrassed” by the amount of money he’s making.
Speaking to Daily Mail’s Weekend, former Football Focus presenter Walker said: “I hate talking about money. I feel uncomfortable being paid a lot to do a job I love.
“I remember the first day when a national newspaper published what I had won on the front page. That was awful.
The 45-year-old added: “I am embarrassed by the amount I earn. My parents had no money growing up. All my clothes were handwritten. At a time when people are struggling to put food on the table, it’s awful to have your salary on the front page.
“I know that even people in my family have a hard time planning three meals a day right now, by the end of the month, and it’s a toast again. I understand that this is real heart pain. I was there.’

In the latest list of the BBC’s highest paid stars, published last July, Walker was 18th with a salary of £ 295,000. First place went to Match of the Day host Gary Lineker, who won £ 1.3 million. Walker, who starred in the latest series of Strictly Come Dancing, announced in April that he was leaving BBC Breakfast to join Channel 5 News.
He will also host a number of Channel 5 shows, which reportedly could earn £ 1.5 million in three years, a figure he declined to confirm or deny.
- News 5 with Dan Walker starts on Monday, June 6, at 5:00 PM on Channel 5.
