Heavy rain, thunderstorms headed for Toronto

Environment Canada issued a special weather statement for Toronto and surrounding areas before potentially “significant rainfall” and accompanying thunderstorms.

The rain will start on Monday night and will last at least until Tuesday night, the agency said in a statement.

“Rain and sometimes thunderstorms are expected to move to the region as a cold front approaches from the west,” said Environment Canada.

The amount of precipitation is expected to be a total of 25 to 50 millimeters and may be even higher in areas experiencing thunderstorms.

The rain should stop raining on Tuesday night at the earliest after the aforementioned cold front.

Environment Canada said there was some uncertainty about the road and weather on the cold front, which could affect the exact weather and total rainfall. If necessary, precipitation warnings can also be issued.

Other areas under the special weather statement include the Hamilton, Halton and Peel, Niagara regions, as well as the York and Durham regions.

Current average temperatures in the Toronto area are below 20 degrees Celsius.

These temperatures are expected to drop to a low 10 on Tuesday night before rising again on Wednesday.
