The first case of monkeypox in British Columbia was found in a patient in Vancouver.

The British Columbia Centers for Disease Control has confirmed the infection through laboratory tests, the National Microbiological Laboratory said Monday, awaiting further confirmation.

Vancouver Coastal Health is monitoring public health, a press release said.

Since May, more than 700 cases of monkeypox have been found in non-endemic countries, mostly in Europe, according to the BCC’s CDC. As of June 3, there were 77 confirmed cases in Canada, 71 in Quebec, five in Ontario and one in Alberta.

“The risk of monkeypox to the general public is very low,” the center said. “There is no need for the general public to be vaccinated.”

Monkeypox is spread by contact with wounds and objects such as bed linen or towels that contain the virus. It can also be spread by respiratory droplets distributed when coughing or sneezing.

It is not known to be spread through semen, vaginal or rectal fluids, the center added, but can be transmitted through close contact during sexual activity.

“Anyone, regardless of gender or sexual orientation, can become infected and spread the virus if they come into close contact, including intimate sexual contact with an infected person or an infected person,” said Dr. Teresa Tam, Chief Public Officer. healthcare in Canada, said at a briefing on Friday.

Symptoms consist mainly of skin lesions on the mouth and genitals and may include fever, headache and joint and muscle pain, according to the World Health Organization.

The cases of monkeypox in Canada are thought to have originated in a sauna in Montreal, doctors told Global News.

However, government officials have so far not confirmed Canada’s origins, citing privacy concerns and stigma.

The CDC advises people who have been exposed to monkeypox to watch for symptoms that may appear between five and 21 days after exposure.

Anyone who develops symptoms is asked to visit a medical professional, wear a mask and cover the lesions, and inform the clinic in advance.

They should also limit close contact, including sexual contact, with others, it added.
