‘Miss. Marvel ‘Episode 1: The moment of AvengerCon that was cut

In “Ms. Marvel “at Disney +, which debuted in its first episode on Wednesday, Kamala Khan is the biggest fan of Captain Marvel. The teenager is running a superhero series on YouTube, making her own cosplay costumes and striving to be just like her favorite Avengers.

Kamala’s fan girl is a familiar territory for lead screenwriter and executive producer Bisha K. Ali, who admits that she went crazy when she was younger and thus approached fan culture through a festive lens.

“I was a maniac when it wasn’t acceptable and cool, so I understand the passion and love of the fans,” she told TVLine. “It was really important for us in building this show that Kamala Khan herself is a fan. This is a show for fans and for the fantasy of fans to become part of Marvel. “

For Ali, the Disney + series had to “talk to this generation of viewers who have MCU in their bones.” It was really exciting to be able to tell a story from that point of view. Kamala will represent the audience so much in the future. “

In Episode 1, Kamala slips out of her house to attend AvengerCon (the Avengers Convention) and participate in the Captain Marvel cosplay contest. The scene included many Easter eggs, such as Captain America’s cosplayers, Groot’s T-shirt, which he called Mr. Tree (because no one knows his name), and that giant ant-man’s head crashing through the event space when Kamala for the first time (and most unexpectedly) he shows his strength.

According to Ali, the original scene contained even more Avengers nods, which were reduced before they came out.

“At one point, there was a man wearing a full corg (as in Thor: Ragnarok) cosplay, and he couldn’t get through the security barriers,” she explains. “It was in a very early draft that no longer exists.”

Ali also suggested a “winged horse” like the one Valkyrie rides, “so we can represent everyone on the show,” but that didn’t make the final cut either. “AvengerCon’s first banana draft, which will never see the light of day, attracted everyone to it,” she said.

And while AvengerCon remains a fictional event in the series, Ms. Marvel’s boss hopes to one day turn it into a real thing.

“I have prepared an email to [Marvel Studios boss] Kevin Feigi, with our idea of how we can make AvengerCon real in the real world, “she said. I haven’t sent it yet, but I say to myself, “We have to make it happen somehow.”
