Three people were killed and four others were injured when a fire broke out at a manufacturing facility in western Maryland on Thursday afternoon, authorities said.
Deputies responded to the active shooting at Columbia Machine, Inc. on Bikle Road in Smithsburg around 2:30 p.m.
A short time later, about 5 miles south of the plant, a Maryland serviceman suffered a minor injury in a shootout with suspects on Mapleville Road, the Washington County Sheriff said.
Authorities have arrested the shooter, who is alive, officials said.
Chopper4’s video of the aftermath of this scene shows a red four-door car pressed by a burgundy SUV on Mapleville Road near the Aetna roundabout.
On the ground in front of the driver’s door of the red car, police placed an evidence mark next to a pistol.
The shooter has been hospitalized, but their condition is unclear.
“The suspect is no longer a threat to the community,” the Washington County Sheriff said on Facebook.
Smithsburg is in a remote area near the Maryland-Pennsylvania border, a few miles from Hagerstown, Maryland, and about 75 miles west of Baltimore.
No additional information was immediately available.
