Summer Game Fest 2022: All news, trailers and announcements

Summer Game Fest returned this year on Thursday, June 9, with a live event in which host Jeff Keeley showed new game announcements, new trailers for upcoming games and some surprising revelations.

If you haven’t caught the stream on YouTube, Twitch, Twitter or Facebook, we’ve put together the biggest messages and news below.

Street Fighter 6

Just one week after the game’s official launch, Capcom is now giving fans a new, expanded look at Street Fighter 6, the company’s next-generation fighting game. On Thursday at the Summer Game Fest, Capcom showed Guile in a battle against US rival Luke and veteran fighter Ryu.

Aliens: Dark descent

Aliens: Dark Descent is a new third-person action game from Tindalos Interactive. The cinematic trailer for Dark Descent shows a small team of colonial Marines working to cross a base. We see a team of four Marines using automatic weapons and a missile launcher to slow down, but not stop, an invading wave of creatures. Announced at the Summer Game Fest, Aliens: Dark Descent arrives in 2023.

The Callisto Protocol

Striking Distance CEO Glenn Schofield was available for the Summer Game Fest to show a new trailer and gameplay footage for The Callisto Protocol – a trailer that Jeff Keeley’s host called “Schofield cut” – that shows how dangerous it can be space. The video debuted on Thursday during the Summer Game Fest, showing more of the game’s viscous threat than ever.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

A new level for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 was unveiled at the Summer Game Fest. The level, called Dark Water, is placed on a massive cargo ship. The ship-level trailer shows some impressive visuals and skirmishes from the game, but the most notable part may be the moving cover.

Retrospective 2

The iconic classic platformer, developed by Microids Studio Lyon, has finally been released for 30 years after the release of the original game. Flashback 2 also has a release window. Announced during the Summer Game Fest, the game will be released in the winter of 2022.

Fort Solis

Two industry veterans: Troy Baker (The Last of Us) and Roger Clark (Red Dead Redemption 2) have teamed up to work on a new thriller game set on Mars called Fort Solis. The two announced the game on stage at the Summer Game Fest on Thursday.

The game’s debut trailer irritates the concept: space settlers colonized Mars, but then something went wrong. The frantic clips of the emergency base pile up to the last clip of a man saying, “Something’s going on here and I need to figure out what it is.”

routine

The science fiction horror game Routine has finally been updated after nearly a decade in development. The premiere of the new trailer was during the Summer Game Fest on Thursday. The game is aimed at PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and Game Pass, but there is no release date yet.

The Routine rediscovery trailer takes players back to its dark and terrifying futuristic setting, using all the footage in the game. According to a press release from the developer of Lunar Software, the team revived the game, restoring it from scratch to better match its original vision.

Stormgate

Frost Giant Studios, a team of many former Blizzard Entertainment developers who have worked on games such as StarCraft 2 and Warcraft 3, unveiled their debut game at Thursday’s Summer Game Fest. Stormgate is a new real-time strategy game that promises “an ever-evolving story through exciting campaign missions where science fiction and fantasy collide.”

Highwater

Publisher Rogue Games and developer Demagog are asking players to venture into the dark, flooded world of Highwater, the “isometric story-driven survival game” announced Thursday during the Summer Game Fest.

Goat simulator 3

Coffee Stain Studios caught us again. No, this was not a trailer for Dead Island 2, this is Goat Simulator 3 – again riffs on a trailer for Dead Island. The trailer for Goat Simulator 3 debuted on Thursday during the Summer Game Fest.

Of course, there is no Goat Simulator 2 and it just makes sense to call it Goat Simulator 3. Chaos. It comes for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Windows PCs through the Epic Games Store in 2022.

Marvel Midnight Suns

Marvel’s Midnight Suns, the next turn-based game by the team behind XCOM, unveiled a new – and unusual – turn-based feature on Thursday. You can see more in the new game trailer released during the Summer Game Fest.

Delicious last course of Cuphead DLC

Ahead of the release date of Cuphead’s new DLC, Studio MDHR debuted with a new trailer during Thursday’s Summer Game Fest. The new DLC, called The Delicious Last Course, comes on the Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and Windows PC on June 30.

Honkai: Star Rail

Honkai: Star Rail is a new science fiction open-world adventure by the creators of Genshin Impact. The game follows the story of a protagonist who embarks on an interstellar voyage aboard the Astral Express. The game includes a turn-based combat system that makes you assemble a team of unique fighters, each with their own different combat abilities.

Zenless Zone Zero

Zenless Zone Zero is HoYoverse’s latest project. The lavish cinematic trailer was unveiled during the Summer Game Fest live event.

Host Jeff Keeley launched the trailer with a touch of analysis, saying that ZZZ offers “the details of the Genshin Impact with a quick style of action.” The Futuristic Urban Action Game, as he called it, takes place in a city called New Eridu, where a huge conspiracy is rampant.

TMNT: Schroeder’s Revenge

Old-school beat-’em-up Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge gets its seventh game character, Casey Jones, developer of Tribute Games and Dotemu, unveiled at the Summer Game Fest on Thursday. Jones, a watchman with hockey masks and sticks, will join Donatello, Leonardo, Michelangelo, Raphael, Splinter and April O’Neill in honor of Konami’s Ninja Turtle games of the past.

One Piece Odyssey

Bandai Namco has revealed a new look at One Piece Odyssey, a new JRPG based on the long-running anime and manga One Piece. The publisher revealed new information about the next big adventure of the Straw Hats at Summer Game Fest on Thursday.

Saints Row Boss Factory

The upcoming reboot of Saints Row on Volition, simply titled Saints Row, will not be available until August 23 – but you can continue and design your character now. Saints Row Boss Factory is a pre-release download that is now available on all platforms.

Nightingale

The first-person fantasy survival game Inflexion Games Nightingale appeared on Thursday at Summer Game Fest with a new trailer showing how its card system blends in with its 3D world.

Nightingale is described as a shared world, a player’s game against the environment, in which players will fight and work through the Victorian fantasy world and visit many different spheres. (Cards seem to be very important for jumping into kingdoms.)

Layers of fears

Bloober Team is making another hit in its psychological and psychedelic horror franchise Layers of Fear. Layers of Fears, officially announced at the Summer Game Fest on Thursday, is expected to be released on the PlayStation 5, Windows PC Xbox Series X in early 2023.

Judging by the trailer, there is certainly a familiar, scary mood. The story will not focus on one character; instead, it will unravel between different generations.

The Knights of Gotham

Batman may not be on the scene at the Gotham Knights, but there are still many criminals to keep the city safe. WB Games Montreal’s latest DC Universe game received a new gameplay demonstration on Thursday during the Summer Game Fest, and this time the main focus was Dick Grayson, also known as Nightwing.

The trailer allows Nightwing to perform a bit before showing off some of his impressive moves in battle. It has double batons, a grappling hook, a projectile weapon and some fantastic martial arts.

The Last of Us, Part 1

The revised version of The Last of Us launched on September 2 on the PlayStation 5 and came later on a Windows computer. The remake has a new name, The Last of Us Part 1, to match the title of the sequel to the 2020 PlayStation 4 game, The Last of Us Part 2.

Naughty Dog co-chair Neil Druckman confirmed a remake of The Last of Us at the Summer Game Fest on Thursday, calling the PlayStation 5 a reissue of the “final version” of the game.
