He said: “I do not think this is in line with international law and the British government’s obligations under international law.
“And that will show over time, but more worryingly, it’s a new downturn in British-Irish relations, certainly over the last 25 years.
The European Union could impose record fines of more than € 1 million (£ 870,000) a day on the UK for its plans to repeal the Northern Ireland Protocol.
As tensions rise over the government’s move to abolish checks on goods between Britain and the province, the European Commission will launch three lawsuits against the United Kingdom on Wednesday.
Prior to the provocative announcement, the Commission’s lawyers were repressing war games for what the bloc considered a violation of the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement.
In previous advice on the possibility of infringement, EU legal services have raised the possibility of imposing huge fines on Britain until it returns to its commitments to the deal.
The memorandum states that the Court of Justice has “full power” to strike Britain with a “lump sum or pecuniary sanction” for non-compliance with the bloc’s Supreme Court ruling.
“Damage to our international reputation”
Meanwhile, Tory lawmakers who oppose the new law voiced new criticism on Tuesday.
Simon Hoare, chairman of the Northern Ireland Selection Committee, told The Telegraph: “There is potential here to express concern from both wings of the party.
“There must be a unifying question, ‘Is this what the Tories do?’ It diminishes and damages our international reputation.”
“Britain has always been seen as a country that, if it gives its word, sticks to it, and this is now being deliberately undermined.
“What would we say as a party if Labor did that?” We were going to make hay. ”
But a Tory MP who is a member of a nation’s liberal group said – for potential rebels – he is “cautious not to be at the” wrong “end to the Brexit dispute and how this will be perceived by voters”.
They added that “there is a problem that definitely needs to be resolved with the protocol” and the congressmen are aware that “the EU will not be lenient about this, so any dispute in the party will strengthen their hand”.
