Fernando Alonso set the fastest time in an intriguing final training session at the Canadian Grand Prix, before what promises to be an exciting qualifier in Montreal.

Alonso overtook Pierre Gasley of AfaTauri and Aston Martin of Sebastian Vettel, both of whom were just over half a tenth behind the Spaniard, and his Alpine teammate Esteban Ocon was fourth.

After choosing not to participate in the first half of the session, World Cup leader Max Verstappen was only ninth – a place behind his Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez – and narrowly avoided what could be a costly accident as he turned the corner. 2.

Ferrari confirmed during the session that – as many expected – Charles Leclerc is taking a new power unit and will start Sunday’s race from the back row, a decision that meant that the Monegasque have chosen not to set a lap time.

After battling on Friday, Mercedes did not seem to take advantage of the wet conditions, with George Russell seventh behind McLarens of Daniel Ricciardo and Lando Norris, while Lewis Hamilton was 15th.

Carlos Sainz’s other Ferrari, who finished 10th, set the early pace as all cars remained on wet tires in the first half of the session, with Vettel taking first place just before some cars switched to intermediate.

Alonso, who was fast on the wet, immediately excelled at intervals, shooting at the top of the schedule as the track conditions seemed to improve despite the constant rain.

The Spaniard would exchange the fastest lap several times with Vettel before Gasley jumped to second place in the final moments of the session.

While Leclerc’s decision to stay in the garage for the most part was understandable, given that dry conditions are expected for tomorrow’s race, Verstappen staying off the track for the first 35 minutes was a more curious decision.

When the leader of the World Cup still appeared, he failed to equalize the speed of Alonso and it will be interesting to see if he has more to offer in the qualifiers, during which the rain is expected to continue.

Although Alonso’s 1: 33.836 lap time was almost 20 seconds from Verstappen’s leading effort in P2 on Friday, conditions brought drama in the final practice as the drivers struggled to stay on the track all the time.

Kevin Magnussen was another who managed to escape while continuing straight on turn 2 in Haas and there will no doubt be further incidents as the drivers insist on net positions in the qualifiers.

Hamilton, who declared his Mercedes “unmanageable” during P2 on Friday, was one of three drivers, along with Russell and Sainz, who did their best on wet tires.
